# Where should an RSD device be placed during installation?

## This article outlines the standard for selecting a safe, secure, and serviceable mounting position for an RSD device. It covers placement criteria, unsuitable locations, inspection requirements, and the checks that must be completed before commissioning.

 DEVICE PLACEMENT PURPOSE

This SOP sets the minimum standard for placing an RSD device during installation. The objective is to protect the device, support accurate and reliable Connected Vehicle data capture, and reduce avoidable rework.

 SCOPE

Use this procedure for all RSD installations unless a vehicle-specific installation standard overrides it.

 RESPONSIBILITY

The installer is responsible for selecting a safe, secure, and serviceable mounting position, protecting cabling, and confirming the installation is ready for commissioning before closing the job.

 REQUIRED OUTCOME

Before the installation is completed, the device must be:

- mounted securely
- protected from heat, moisture, impact, and vibration
- positioned so cabling is safe and supported
- clear of moving parts and safety systems
- accessible for future service if required

 TOOLS AND MATERIALS

Confirm the required tools and materials are available before starting:

- approved RSD device
- mounting materials suitable for the install standard
- cable protection materials as required
- hand tools required to remove and refit trim safely
- cleaning materials for the mounting surface if required
- test and commissioning tools required for the final check

Do not begin final placement until the installer has confirmed the device, mounting method, and cable route are suitable for the vehicle.

 SOP PROCEDURE

### 1. ASSESS

Before mounting the device, inspect the vehicle and confirm:

- available internal mounting areas
- cable path from power source to device location
- nearby heat sources
- moving components, pedals, steering linkages, or service points
- airbags, trim clips, covers, or panels that must not be obstructed

**Do not place the device until the cable route and final mounting position are both clear.**

### 2. SELECT

Choose a mounting location that is:

- inside the vehicle or a protected internal cavity
- dry and stable during normal vehicle operation
- unlikely to be kicked, crushed, or disturbed
- suitable for a firm mount
- practical for neat cable management

Where more than one location is suitable, choose the position that provides the best balance of protection, stability, and future service access.

### 3. REJECT

Do not mount the device in any location that is:

- exposed to water ingress
- directly adjacent to high heat sources
- loose, flexible, or likely to vibrate excessively
- near moving mechanical parts
- likely to be disturbed during standard servicing
- in the way of driver operation or vehicle safety systems

If no acceptable location is available, stop and escalate before proceeding.

### 4. CONFIRM FIT

Before securing the device, confirm:

- the device sits flat or stable in the chosen location
- wiring and connectors are not under tension
- trim or covers can be refitted correctly
- the device will not rattle or shift once installed

If the device fit is compromised, select a different location.

### 5. SECURE

Mount the device so it remains stable during normal driving conditions.

During mounting:

- keep the device firmly fixed
- keep cabling neat and supported
- avoid sharp edges and pinch points
- leave the installation area clean and safe

**A device that can move after installation is not acceptable.**

### 6. INSPECT

Before testing, verify:

- the device is secure
- cables are protected and not exposed to damage
- no vehicle controls or panels are obstructed
- no safety systems are affected
- the work area is reassembled correctly

### 7. RELEASE

Once placement is complete, the installation can proceed to standard testing and commissioning.

Do not close the job until the placement is secure and the vehicle is returned in a safe condition.

 PHOTO EVIDENCE REQUIRED

Capture photo evidence before the job is closed.

Minimum photo set:

- overall view of the installation area
- mounted device in final position
- cable routing near the device
- refitted trim or final finished area where applicable

Photo evidence must be clear enough to confirm:

- device position
- mounting quality
- cable protection
- final presentation of the work area

If the device location is concealed after reassembly, take the photo before the final panel is refitted.

 INSTALLER CHECKLIST

Use this checklist before moving to final testing:

- \[ \] Mounting location inspected
- \[ \] Cable route confirmed
- \[ \] Location protected from heat and moisture
- \[ \] Location clear of moving parts
- \[ \] Location clear of safety systems
- \[ \] Device secured firmly
- \[ \] Cabling neat and protected
- \[ \] Photo evidence captured
- \[ \] Panels and trim refitted correctly
- \[ \] Install ready for commissioning

 VEHICLE-SPECIFIC NOTES

Vehicle layout can vary. Apply this SOP with reference to the vehicle’s available protected mounting space, access points, and service constraints.

Record any vehicle-specific notes where:

- the standard mounting position is not available
- an alternative cable route is required
- additional protection is needed due to the operating environment
- access limitations affect the installation method

Where a non-standard placement decision is made, note the reason clearly in the job record.

 ESCALATION

Escalate the installation decision if:

- no safe mounting position is available
- the chosen location creates risk to vehicle operation
- the device cannot be secured properly
- the cable route introduces avoidable damage risk
- the vehicle layout prevents a standard installation outcome
