# Why was my stop recorded as a single trip instead of two trips?

## FleetConnect is designed to prevent unnecessary trip splits caused by modern vehicle technologies such as stop-start systems, hybrids, and vehicles that continue operating certain systems after the ignition is turned off.

To achieve this, if the vehicle appears to turn off and then back on again within 3 minutes, the system may automatically combine the activity into a single trip.

**How does the system determine if the ignition is on or off?**
Most vehicles do not provide a simple "ignition on/off" signal to the tracking device. Instead, the device evaluates a combination of inputs, including:

- Battery/system voltage
- Engine RPM (where available)
- Vehicle movement
- Inertia and motion sensors
- OBD/CAN bus data (where supported)
- Other vehicle activity signals

The device uses these inputs together to determine whether the vehicle is genuinely operating or has been switched off.

**Why does this occur more frequently in hybrids and EVs?**
Hybrid and electric vehicles often do not provide a traditional ignition signal.

In some cases:

- Engine RPM may be zero while the vehicle is ready to drive.
- Battery voltage may remain steady.
- Vehicle systems may remain fully operational without the engine running.
- Ignition may be represented by a manufacturer-specific "Ready Mode" rather than a conventional ignition state.

Because of this, the RoadScout Device frequently use a combination of voltage, movement, and vehicle data to determine vehicle status.

**Can the trip-joining behaviour be changed?**
The trip-joining logic is intentionally designed to improve trip accuracy across a wide range of vehicle types. Adjusting this behaviour may result in excessive trip fragmentation, particularly in vehicles equipped with stop-start, hybrid, or advanced power management systems.

**Summary**
If a vehicle records an ignition-off event followed by an ignition-on event within **3 minutes**, the system may combine the activity into a single trip. This behaviour helps ensure accurate trip reporting across modern vehicles where engine status alone is no longer a reliable indication of whether a journey has ended. It also reduces false trip breaks caused by stop-start systems, hybrid battery operation, and vehicle shutdown procedures.
